What Sec 1 Maths Actually Covers: The MOE Syllabus, Topic by Topic

Every topic in the MOE Sec 1 maths syllabus, by strand, plus what changes from PSLE: algebra widens, speed is new content, and each school sets its own order.

Short answer. Sec 1 maths in Singapore follows the MOE lower-secondary mathematics syllabus, which is organised into three strands: number and algebra, geometry and measurement, and statistics and probability. In Sec 1 a G3 student covers eleven topics, from primes and prime factorisation through to data handling. The two that catch families out are algebra, which expands well beyond the small amount met at P6, and rate and speed, which is no longer taught at primary level at all. The syllabus sets the topics by level but not by term, so the order your child meets them in is decided by their school.

Parents usually go looking for the Sec 1 topic list for one of two reasons. Either the first set of results has come back lower than PSLE and they want to know what changed, or Sec 1 has not started yet and they want to know what is coming. This page answers both, using the syllabus document itself rather than a summary of it.

The Sec 1 maths topic list

These are the topics a Secondary 1 student following the G3 mathematics syllabus covers, grouped by strand. Topic codes are MOE’s own.

Some detail behind the labels, because the names hide the work:

N1 covers primes and prime factorisation, finding HCF and LCM by prime factorisation, negative numbers and the four operations on them, use of the inequality symbols, and approximation to a given number of decimal places or significant figures. N5 introduces letters for numbers, algebraic notation, evaluating expressions and formulae, finding the nth term of a pattern, and the four operations on algebraic expressions. N6 brings in Cartesian coordinates, linear functions and gradient. N7 is solving linear equations, including fractional equations that reduce to linear ones. G1 runs from basic angle properties through parallel lines and transversals to the interior and exterior angle sums of any convex polygon, and includes geometrical construction with compasses and set squares. G5 is area of parallelogram and trapezium, and volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders. S1 is collecting and tabulating data and reading bar graphs, pictograms, line graphs and pie charts.

The syllabus sets topics by level, not by term

This is the single most useful thing to understand before you compare notes with another parent. MOE assigns each topic to Secondary One or Secondary Two, and then stops. It does not say that angles come before algebra, or that mensuration lands in Term 3.

The practical effect is that two students at two schools can both be “on track” in Sec 1 while sitting in completely different chapters in April. A child at Xinmin and a child at North Vista are covering the same eleven topics across the year, in an order their own maths departments decided. So a parent whose child is behind their cousin at another school is often comparing sequence, not standard.

It also means a topic list is not a revision plan. Your child’s school scheme of work is, and it is worth asking for it at the first parent session.

What actually changes from PSLE

Three things change at once in Sec 1, which is why the drop in marks so often looks worse than the drop in understanding.

Algebra stops being a small chapter. At P6, algebra is deliberately narrow: using a letter for an unknown number, simple linear expressions without brackets, evaluating by substitution, and simple linear equations with whole-number coefficients only. In Sec 1, algebra runs through three of the seven number and algebra topics, and by the end of the year a student is expected to solve fractional equations that reduce to linear form. That is a wide gap to cross in one year, and it is crossed in the first two terms.

The model method stops carrying the load. At PSLE a hard problem can be drawn. Bar models, units and parts, before-and-after, and a fluent child can reason through most of the paper on those methods. Algebra asks the same child to hold the relationship in symbols instead of in a picture. This is an interpretation rather than a syllabus fact, but it is the pattern we see most often: the student has not become weaker at maths, they have been asked to think in a different representation and nobody said so out loud.

Speed is genuinely new content. Rate and speed sits in Sec 1 as topic N4, covering average rate, constant speed, average speed and unit conversion such as km/h to m/s. The word “speed” does not appear anywhere in the current primary mathematics syllabus. For your child, this is not revision of a PSLE topic. It is a new one, arriving in a year when several other things are also new.

Calculators are another small surprise. Calculator use is written into the Sec 1 syllabus from N1 onward, and there is no non-calculator paper at national level in secondary maths. Parents who sat a different system often assume otherwise.

Does the topic list change for G1, G2 and G3?

Yes, and less than most parents expect. Under Full Subject-Based Banding a student takes each subject at G1, G2 or G3, and mathematics is one of the subjects that can be taken at a different level from the rest.

Comparing the two syllabus documents directly, G2 Sec 1 covers the same topics as G3 Sec 1 with one structural difference: functions and graphs (N6) is not a Sec 1 topic for G2 students, it arrives in Sec 2. Depth differs within shared topics as well. The strands and the topic names are the same, which is part of why a student can move up a level at the end of Sec 1 without starting from nothing.

What Sec 2 adds

Sec 2 is where the year of foundation gets spent. Ratio extends to map scales and to direct and inverse proportion. Algebra adds expansion, the three standard identities, factorisation of quadratic expressions, and algebraic fractions. Functions and graphs adds quadratic functions and their maximum and minimum points. Equations adds inequalities, simultaneous linear equations by substitution, elimination and graph, and solving quadratic equations by factorisation. Geometry adds congruence and similarity, Pythagoras’ theorem and the three trigonometric ratios, and the volume and surface area of pyramids, cones and spheres. Statistics adds histograms, stem-and-leaf diagrams, mean, mode and median, and the first work on probability.

Read that list next to the Sec 1 list and the design is obvious. Almost every Sec 2 topic is a Sec 1 topic taken further. A student who did not secure algebraic manipulation in Sec 1 does not meet a fresh start in Sec 2, they meet factorisation of quadratics built on top of the thing they did not secure.

Where Sec 1 students actually lose marks

From what we see in class, the marks do not usually go missing on the hard topics. They go missing in three ordinary places.

Negative numbers and signs, once brackets and algebra arrive together. A student who is fine with negative numbers on their own starts dropping signs when expanding, and the error looks like carelessness rather than what it usually is, which is a method still being held together by memory.

Presentation of working. Secondary marking gives method marks. A student who has spent six years writing an answer and a short model has to learn to write a line of reasoning, and that habit is built in Sec 1 or it is not built.

Word problems, once the translation step is algebraic. The child can solve the equation and cannot write the equation. This is the specific skill in N5 and N7 that the syllabus calls translating real-world situations into algebraic expressions, and it is the one most worth practising deliberately.

Our own view, and it is a view rather than a fact: the best use of Sec 1 is comprehension, not exam technique. There is no national paper for four years. A Sec 1 student drilled on past papers is being sold something that will matter later at the expense of something that matters now. That is why our Sec 1 and Sec 2 maths class is taught to the lower-secondary syllabus in its own right rather than as early preparation for Sec 3.

How to tell whether your child is coping

Grades in Sec 1 are a lagging signal, and a weak one, because schools weight the year differently and some run a gentle first term. Two better checks, both free.

Ask your child to explain a method out loud, not to produce an answer. “Why does that step work?” is the question. Fluent explanation and a wrong answer is a good position. A right answer and no explanation is the one to watch, because it usually means a procedure is being remembered rather than understood, and remembered procedures fail when the question is phrased differently.

Look at the working on a returned paper rather than the mark. Sign errors, skipped lines and answers with no route to them tell you far more than the percentage at the top.

Is Sec 1 maths harder than PSLE maths?

It is different rather than uniformly harder. PSLE rewards fluency with the model method on genuinely difficult problems. Sec 1 introduces algebra as the main tool, adds new content in rate and speed, and expects working to be written as reasoning. Students who scored well at PSLE can still find the first term of Sec 1 uncomfortable, and that is normal.

When does algebra start in Singapore?

Formally at P6, in a limited form: a letter for an unknown, simple linear expressions without brackets, and simple linear equations with whole-number coefficients. Sec 1 expands it substantially, ending the year with fractional equations that reduce to linear form.

Do Sec 1 students use calculators?

Yes. Calculator use is written into the Sec 1 syllabus, and secondary mathematics at national level has no non-calculator paper. An approved model is required, and schools specify which.

Does every school teach Sec 1 topics in the same order?

No. MOE assigns topics to Secondary One and Secondary Two but does not prescribe the order or the term. Each school sets its own scheme of work, so two students on the same syllabus can be in different chapters at the same point in the year.

What is the difference between G1, G2 and G3 maths in Sec 1?

The strands and most topic names are shared. The clearest structural difference in Sec 1 is that functions and graphs is a Sec 2 topic for G2 students rather than a Sec 1 one, and treatment within shared topics differs in depth. Levels can change at set points in Sec 1 and Sec 2.

Will my child sit the O-Level?

Only if they are in Sec 4 in 2026. Every year group below that will sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate, which replaces the O-Level from 2027 and is taken at G1, G2 or G3 subject levels. Three questions parents ask us at the point of deciding

Should we start tuition in Sec 1, or wait and see how the year goes?

If the two checks above look fine, wait. If your child cannot explain their methods, start now rather than in Sec 3, because secondary maths compounds. A gap in Sec 1 algebra becomes a Sec 3 problem in quadratic functions, and by then it has to be repaired while new content keeps arriving. My child had good PSLE maths results. Is a drop in Sec 1 a real problem?

Usually not by itself. Look at what the marks are being lost on. Lost on sign errors and unwritten working, it is a habit problem and it is fixable in weeks. Lost on translating word problems into equations, that is the algebra gap and it needs proper attention before Sec 2.

Can we do anything over the December holidays before Sec 1 starts?

Something small and specific beats a head start on the syllabus. Negative numbers with brackets, and writing out working line by line, are the two things that pay off immediately.
