The Five PSLE Science Themes, and Where Marks Go
Every PSLE Science question comes from one of five themes. These are the traps we see most often in each:
- ✓Diversity: classifying living and non-living things. The trap is memorising the groups without the criteria behind them.
- ✓Cycles: life cycles, the water cycle and matter. The trap is naming the stages without explaining why each one happens.
- ✓Systems: body, plant and electrical systems. The trap is not tracing an effect through the connected parts.
- ✓Interactions: food chains and webs, adaptations and human impact. The trap is losing the thread in multi-step cause and effect.
- ✓Energy: energy forms and conversions, heat and light. The trap is getting the order of the conversions wrong.

How PSLE Science is examined
PSLE Science is assessed in a single paper split into two booklets. Booklet A is multiple choice and Booklet B is open-ended, together worth 100 marks. The paper draws on five big themes taught across the primary years: Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Energy, and Interactions. Many questions are experiment-based, asking students to read data tables and graphs, compare variables, and apply concepts to unfamiliar situations rather than simply recall facts. Results are graded on the PSLE Achievement Level (AL) bands, from AL1 to AL8, and open-ended answers are marked on the use of correct science keywords and clear reasoning, which is exactly what we drill.
Concepts, keywords, and answering technique
Most marks lost in PSLE Science are lost in Booklet B, where a student understands the idea but does not phrase the answer the way the marker needs. We teach the essential science keywords for each topic and train students to write cause-and-effect explanations that link evidence to conclusion. We also build the inquiry skills the paper rewards: interpreting graphs and tables, identifying the variables in an experiment, and transferring a concept to a new context. Working across the five themes, we make sure the fundamentals from the lower-primary years are secure, then sharpen exam technique and timing on past-year questions. For P6 students we diagnose weak themes quickly and focus on the question types that move the AL.
An example. A question shows two plants grown in different light and asks why Plant A grew taller. "Because it got more sunlight" earns partial marks at best. "Plant A received more light, so it could carry out more photosynthesis and make more food for growth" earns full marks. The child knew the science both times. The difference is training.
