PSLE Score Calculator

Enter your child’s mark in each of the four PSLE subjects. The calculator gives each subject’s Achievement Level (AL), the PSLE Score, the Posting Group, which subjects can start at a more demanding level in Sec 1, and which secondary schools in Hougang, Serangoon, Sengkang and Punggol that score would have reached last year. It follows MOE’s published scoring rules.

PSLE Score Calculator

Enter your child's mark out of 100 for each subject. Choose Foundation for any subject taken at Foundation level.

How it works

How the PSLE Score is calculated

Each subject’s mark is placed into an Achievement Level from AL1 (best) to AL8. The four ALs are added up. The total, from 4 to 32, is the PSLE Score, and lower is better.

AL Standard subject mark
AL1 90 and above
AL2 85 to 89
AL3 80 to 84
AL4 75 to 79
AL5 65 to 74
AL6 45 to 64
AL7 20 to 44
AL8 Below 20
Grade Foundation mark Counts as
A 75 to 100 AL6
B 30 to 74 AL7
C Below 30 AL8

Worked example. English 70, Maths 70, Science 60, Mother Tongue 60 gives AL5, AL5, AL6 and AL6, a PSLE Score of 22. That falls in the band where parents choose between Posting Group 2 and Posting Group 3. Lifting Science from 60 to 75 (AL6 to AL4) would make it 20, which is Posting Group 3 only.

Posting

PSLE Score and Posting Group

The PSLE Score decides the Posting Group, and the Posting Group sets the level most subjects start at in Secondary 1.

PSLE Score Posting Group Most subjects start at
4 to 20 3 G3
21 to 22 2 or 3 G2 or G3
23 to 24 2 G2
25 1 or 2 G1 or G2
26 to 30 1 (with AL7 or better in English and Maths) G1

Starting a subject at a more demanding level. In English, Maths, Science and Mother Tongue, a student whose subjects mostly start at G2 can take a subject at G3 with AL5 or better in it. A student starting mostly at G1 can take a subject at G2 or G3 with AL5 or better, or at G2 with AL6 or a Foundation grade A. Schools also review subject levels during Secondary 1.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

How is the PSLE Score calculated?+
Each of the four subjects is given an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8 based on the mark. The four ALs are added together to give the PSLE Score, from 4 (the best) to 32. Foundation subjects are graded A, B or C, which count as AL6, AL7 and AL8.
What is a good PSLE Score?+
A score of 4 to 20 places a student in Posting Group 3, where most subjects start at G3. Whether a score is good enough for a particular school depends on that school’s cut-off, which changes every year with demand.
What happens with a PSLE Score of 21, 22 or 25?+
These scores sit on a boundary. A score of 21 or 22 makes a student eligible for Posting Group 2 or 3, and 25 for Posting Group 1 or 2. Parents choose one when submitting school choices. If no choices are submitted, MOE assigns the more demanding Posting Group.
Can my child take a subject at G3 if they are in Posting Group 2?+
Yes, for English, Maths, Science and Mother Tongue, if they scored AL5 or better in that subject at PSLE. Posting Group 1 students can take a subject at G2 or G3 with AL5 or better, or at G2 with AL6 or a Foundation grade A.
Does Higher Mother Tongue count towards the PSLE Score?+
No. Higher Mother Tongue is not added to the PSLE Score. Higher Chinese does give a posting advantage for SAP schools: among students with the same score competing for a SAP place, those with better Higher Chinese grades are placed first.
Can I use school exam marks in the calculator?+
Yes, as a rough guide. School papers vary in difficulty, so a P5 or P6 school mark is not the same as a PSLE mark. It is still a useful way to see which subject is pulling the total down.

One subject pulling the score down?

Fix the weakest subject first

Because the PSLE Score is a sum of four bands, lifting one weak subject moves the total more than polishing a strong one. Our P5 and P6 maths and science classes in Hougang have five students each.
