Why it matters

Why PSLE Math Matters

Mathematics at the PSLE level is often a challenge for students. Success requires not just memorizing formulas, but understanding core concepts and presenting solutions clearly. At Arche Academy, we train students to approach math methodically so they can secure full method marks, even when faced with tricky problem sums.

Key features of our PSLE Math programme

Built around what wins marks

Emphasis on key working steps

Our guided practices place strong emphasis on mastering the step-by-step working processes required in solving mathematical problems. By focusing on accuracy in fundamental operations and techniques, students not only arrive at the right answers but also demonstrate logical thought progression. This ensures they consistently earn method marks in exams.

Presentation of solutions

We teach students how to present their solutions in a structured, clear, and concise manner. This includes proper layout of workings, correct mathematical notation, and clear explanation of reasoning. Strong presentation skills boost exam performance and prepare students for higher-level math where clarity is critical.

Cross-topic connections

Many students struggle when questions combine multiple concepts. At Arche Academy, we highlight connections between topics such as fractions, ratios, percentages, and algebra. By learning how these areas overlap, students develop flexibility in problem-solving and can confidently tackle complex exam questions.

Developing niches for deeper understanding

We cultivate genuine interest in mathematics by encouraging students to explore real-world applications and niche topics. For example, applying ratio concepts in financial literacy or geometry in design. This deepens appreciation for math and nurtures a love for problem-solving that extends beyond the PSLE.

How we teach

How We Teach PSLE Math at Arche Academy

  • Small class size (max 5 students) — allows personalised attention and active participation.
  • Customised worksheets — designed to target weak areas while reinforcing strengths.
  • Exam-style practice — regular exposure to PSLE-type questions builds familiarity and reduces anxiety.
  • Step-by-step feedback — tutors correct errors immediately, reinforcing good habits.
  • Parental updates — we provide consistent feedback so parents know their child's progress.

Through this approach, our PSLE Math tuition Singapore programme gives students both the skills and confidence to excel in their exams.

How PSLE Math is examined

PSLE Mathematics is assessed across two papers — we prepare students for both.

Paper 1 · No calculator

Fluency & mental computation

Combines multiple-choice and short-answer questions that test fluency with core concepts and mental computation.

Paper 2 · Calculator allowed

Longer problem sums

Built around longer problem sums that reward clear, step-by-step working and choosing the right strategy.

How it's graded: Results are graded on the PSLE Achievement Level (AL) bands, from AL1 to AL8, based on your child's raw mark. Marks are awarded for method and working, not just the final answer — so we train students to lay out their solutions clearly and show every step.
Our core method

Model method, heuristics & word problems

Most marks at PSLE are won or lost on the longer word problems, and these reward technique as much as knowledge. We teach the model (bar) method rigorously so students can translate a wordy question into a clear diagram, and we build a toolkit of heuristics that unlock the harder questions. Just as important is presentation: neat, logical working that secures method marks even when a final answer slips. Starting in P5 means these habits are second nature by P6; for P6 students we diagnose weak topics quickly and focus on the question types that move the AL.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is PSLE Math scored?+
PSLE Mathematics is graded on the Achievement Level (AL) system, from AL1 (highest) to AL8, based on your child's raw mark. Each subject is scored independently, and the four subject ALs are added to give the overall PSLE score used for secondary school posting.
Can my child join partway through the school year?+
Yes. We assess where your child is, pinpoint the gaps, and align lessons to their current school topics so they can catch up without falling behind. With classes capped at 5, a mid-year joiner still gets the individual attention they need to settle in quickly.
Should my child start PSLE Math tuition in P5 or P6?+
P5 is ideal. The P5 topics, including fractions, ratio, and percentage, feed directly into the P6 material and the hardest problem sums, so a strong P5 foundation makes P6 far less stressful. P6 students are just as welcome; we quickly diagnose weak topics and focus on problem-sum technique and exam timing.
Which PSLE Math topics do students struggle with most?+
The multi-step word problems, especially those involving fractions, ratio, percentage, speed, and area and perimeter, are where most marks are lost. Our lessons drill the model method and heuristics on exactly these question types until students can approach them with a clear plan.
How big are your PSLE Math classes?+
Every class is capped at 5 students, so each learner gets individual worksheets, targeted feedback, and space to ask questions while still learning in a focused group.
Where are your PSLE Math classes held?+
At our centre at Blk 212 Hougang Street 21, convenient for families in Hougang, Kovan, Serangoon, Punggol and Sengkang. You can book a trial class to visit and sit in.
