PSLE Math Tuition for P5 and P6

PSLE maths tuition at Arche Academy is for P5 and P6 students, in classes of no more than five, at our Hougang centre three minutes from Kovan MRT. We find the topics your child is actually losing marks on, then teach the model method, heuristics and clear working that the long Paper 2 problem sums reward.

When PSLE Maths Gets Hard, and When to Start

The jump from P4 to P5 is the one most parents underestimate. P5 brings ratio, percentage change, the first algebra, and problem sums that need two or three concepts in a row. Children who did well in P4 often stall here, because they now have to choose a method rather than repeat one they were shown. P6 then adds exam timing on top of whatever P5 left unfinished, and PSLE maths is cumulative.

So the best time to start is early P5, before the jump. Starting in P6 still works: we find the weak topics in the first few lessons and spend the year on the question types that move the AL. Child still in P3 or P4? See our primary maths tuition for P3 and P4.

Key features of our PSLE Math programme

Built around what wins marks

Emphasis on key working steps

Our guided practices place strong emphasis on mastering the step-by-step working processes required in solving mathematical problems. By focusing on accuracy in fundamental operations and techniques, students not only arrive at the right answers but also demonstrate logical thought progression. This ensures they consistently earn method marks in exams.

Presentation of solutions

We teach students how to present their solutions in a structured, clear, and concise manner. This includes proper layout of workings, correct mathematical notation, and clear explanation of reasoning. Strong presentation skills boost exam performance and prepare students for higher-level math where clarity is critical.

Cross-topic connections

Many students struggle when questions combine multiple concepts. At Arche Academy, we highlight connections between topics such as fractions, ratios, percentages, and algebra. By learning how these areas overlap, students develop flexibility in problem-solving and can confidently tackle complex exam questions.

Developing niches for deeper understanding

We cultivate genuine interest in mathematics by encouraging students to explore real-world applications and niche topics. For example, applying ratio concepts in financial literacy or geometry in design. This deepens appreciation for math and nurtures a love for problem-solving that extends beyond the PSLE.

How we teach

How We Teach PSLE Math at Arche Academy

  • ✓Small class size (max 5 students) — allows personalised attention and active participation.
  • ✓Customised worksheets — designed to target weak areas while reinforcing strengths.
  • ✓Exam-style practice — regular exposure to PSLE-type questions builds familiarity and reduces anxiety.
  • ✓Step-by-step feedback — tutors correct errors immediately, reinforcing good habits.
  • ✓Parental updates — we provide consistent feedback so parents know their child's progress.

Through this approach, our PSLE Math tuition Singapore programme gives students both the skills and confidence to excel in their exams.

The paper, decoded

How PSLE Math is examined

PSLE Mathematics is assessed across two papers — we prepare students for both.

Paper 1 · No calculator

Fluency & mental computation

Combines multiple-choice and short-answer questions that test fluency with core concepts and mental computation.

Paper 2 · Calculator allowed

Longer problem sums

Built around longer problem sums that reward clear, step-by-step working and choosing the right strategy.

How it's graded: Results are graded on the PSLE Achievement Level (AL) bands, from AL1 to AL8, based on your child's raw mark. Marks are awarded for method and working, not just the final answer — so we train students to lay out their solutions clearly and show every step.
Our core method

Model method, heuristics & word problems

Most marks at PSLE are won or lost on the longer word problems, and these reward technique as much as knowledge. We teach the model (bar) method rigorously so students can translate a wordy question into a clear diagram, and we build a toolkit of heuristics that unlock the harder questions. Just as important is presentation: neat, logical working that secures method marks even when a final answer slips. Starting in P5 means these habits are second nature by P6; for P6 students we diagnose weak topics quickly and focus on the question types that move the AL.

Testimonials

★★★★★

"My son always lost marks for not showing steps properly. After joining Arche, he learned how to structure solutions and jumped from a C to an A."

★★★★★

"The teachers showed me how fractions and ratios are linked. Once I saw the connections, problem sums became easier."

A primary result we can name: Jaeden's Science went from 55% (AL6) to 91% (AL1) by his PSLE prelim, and he won an Edusave Good Progress Award for being in the top 10% for improvement. More results, with names, are on our reviews page.
Choosing a centre

How to Choose a PSLE Maths Tuition Centre

Ask every centre on your shortlist the same six questions. Specific answers are a good sign. Vague ones ("we care about every student"), no sample of how progress is reported, or reluctance about a trial are the warning signs. Here is how we answer them.

  • 1What is the maximum class size? Five, as a hard cap. A range such as "4 to 8" usually means the top of the range when demand is high.
  • 2How long have the tutors taught PSLE maths? Our tutors teach PSLE specifically. Years of P5 and P6 teaching matter more than a maths degree on its own.
  • 3How is progress tracked? By topic, not just by test mark. "8/10 on percentage, 3/10 on before-and-after ratio" tells you what to fix; "doing well" does not.
  • 4What happens when a child falls behind? The tutor re-teaches the gap with worksheets built for it, and parents get regular updates on what the next few weeks will focus on.
  • 5When do timed mock papers start? In P6 Semester 2, with a review of why each answer went wrong: wrong method, carelessness, an unknown topic or timing.
  • 6Can my child try a lesson first? Yes. A trial is a real lesson in a regular class, not a separate assessment, so you see how we teach rather than how we test.
Questions parents ask

Frequently Asked Questions

How is PSLE Math scored?+
PSLE Mathematics is graded on the Achievement Level (AL) system, from AL1 (highest) to AL8, based on your child's raw mark. Each subject is scored independently, and the four subject ALs are added to give the overall PSLE score used for secondary school posting.
Can my child join partway through the school year?+
Yes. We assess where your child is, pinpoint the gaps, and align lessons to their current school topics so they can catch up without falling behind. With classes capped at 5, a mid-year joiner still gets the individual attention they need to settle in quickly.
Should my child start PSLE Math tuition in P5 or P6?+
P5 is ideal. The P5 topics, including fractions, ratio, and percentage, feed directly into the P6 material and the hardest problem sums, so a strong P5 foundation makes P6 far less stressful. P6 students are just as welcome; we quickly diagnose weak topics and focus on problem-sum technique and exam timing.
Which PSLE Math topics do students struggle with most?+
The multi-step word problems, especially those involving fractions, ratio, percentage, speed, and area and perimeter, are where most marks are lost. Our lessons drill the model method and heuristics on exactly these question types until students can approach them with a clear plan.
How big are your PSLE Math classes?+
Every class is capped at 5 students, so each learner gets individual worksheets, targeted feedback, and space to ask questions while still learning in a focused group.
Where are your PSLE Math classes held?+
At our centre at Blk 208 Hougang Street 21, #04-215, convenient for families in Hougang, Kovan, Serangoon, Punggol and Sengkang. You can book a trial class to visit and sit in.
