Pure Science or Combined Science: How to Choose in Sec 2

Pure or Combined Science? The papers and weightings side by side, the G2 constraint most parents miss, and how to read a Sec 2 report by discipline before deciding.

Short answer. Pure Science means taking Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate full subjects, each with three papers including a practical. Combined Science pairs two of the three into one subject with five papers, of which a candidate sits four. Pure goes deeper and takes two or three slots on the timetable; Combined takes one and frees a slot for something else. Neither closes off science. The decision is made in Term 4 of Sec 2 on Sec 1 and Sec 2 results, and for most families it is settled less by ambition than by one constraint: at G2 the pure sciences are not offered at all.

That last point catches people out every year, so it is worth stating plainly before anything else.

The constraint that decides it for many families

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, each subject is taken at G1, G2 or G3. From 2027 the sciences appear in the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate as follows: at G3, Physics (K323), Chemistry (K324), Biology (K325) and the three Combined Science pairings (K326, K327, K328). At G2, only the three pairings exist, as K223, K224 and K225.

There is no G2 Physics, no G2 Chemistry and no G2 Biology.

So if your child is banded at G2 for science, the question is not Pure or Combined. It is which pairing, and whether moving up to G3 for science is realistic before the Sec 3 combination is fixed. Two numbers in that table are worth pausing on. In Combined Science the two structured papers carry 65% of the grade between them, one for each of the child’s two sciences, which means a student who is strong in one and weak in the other has nowhere to hide. And the practical is 15% for Combined against 20% for a pure science, so laboratory work decides a meaningful slice either way.

The real trade-off is timetable, not difficulty

Combined Science is not the easy option and Pure Science is not the ambitious one. The honest difference is how much of the week science takes.

A student taking three pure sciences is carrying three separate subjects with three separate practicals. The same student taking Combined Science carries one, and the freed slots go to something else, often a humanity, a second language elective or Additional Mathematics. Schools frequently recommend Combined Science for exactly this reason rather than as a judgement on the child.

Where difficulty does enter is content volume per subject. Combined Science covers less ground in each of its two sciences than the pure syllabus does. It is a smaller amount of material examined seriously, not the same material examined gently.

Which pairing, if it is Combined

Three pairings exist: Physics with Chemistry, Physics with Biology, and Chemistry with Biology.

Physics with Chemistry suits students comfortable with calculation and with quantitative reasoning, and it is the pairing most widely offered. Chemistry with Biology suits students who reason well in words and systems rather than equations, and it is the more common route towards life sciences and health-related courses. Physics with Biology is the least common of the three, and some schools do not run it.

Our own position, and it is a position rather than a fact: the pairing should follow the child’s demonstrated strength across lower secondary, not the school’s default. Our secondary science class teaches both the Physics with Chemistry and the Chemistry with Biology pairings, and parents in the Hougang area tell us Chemistry with Biology is the harder one to find locally.

Read the Sec 2 report by discipline

Here is the practical method we use with families, and it costs nothing.

Lower secondary science is one subject, but its sixteen topics sort cleanly into the three disciplines. Light, forces and energy, heat, and electrical systems are physics. The three diversity topics, both matter topics and chemical changes are chemistry. Cells, ecosystems, digestion, transport in living things and reproduction are biology. Sort your child’s Sec 2 results that way. Three patterns come out of it.

One discipline clearly ahead of the others, and the other two acceptable: that child has a natural pairing, and often a case for a pure science in their strong subject.

Two disciplines strong and one weak: the pairing writes itself, and it is the two strong ones if the school offers that combination.

All three roughly level and all three mediocre: the weakness is usually not subject knowledge. It is terminology, units and data handling, which are common skills. Fix those and the picture changes before the decision has to be made.

That last case is the one worth catching early, because it is the one where the subject decision gets made on a misreading of the child.

Does Combined Science close off JC?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overstating it. A student who does well in Combined Science is in a better position than one who struggles through three pure sciences.

What is true is that specific JC subject combinations and specific polytechnic courses have their own entry requirements, and some H2 science subjects assume the pure syllabus. The route is narrower rather than closed. Check the courses your child is actually aiming at rather than a general rule, and read the current JC and polytechnic admission criteria alongside them, because the aggregates changed for the 2027 and 2028 intakes.

When the decision happens, and what to do before it

Schools run the subject options exercise in Term 4 of Sec 2, after the year-end results. Eligibility and places depend on those results and on each school’s own criteria, which differ between schools.

Three things are worth doing before that week arrives.

Ask your child’s school for its actual criteria, in writing, at the start of Sec 2 rather than in October. Schools vary more than parents expect, and the criteria are usually specific about grades per discipline.

If a pure science matters and your child is at G2 for science, find out what moving to G3 requires and when the review points fall. This is the only part of the decision with a real deadline behind it.

And treat Sec 2 results as the input they are. A child coasting through lower secondary with acceptable marks is heading into this decision with no evidence either way, which is how a capable student ends up in a narrower combination by default. That is the argument for taking lower secondary science seriously as its own thing rather than as a warm-up for Sec 3.

Does Combined Science stop my child taking H2 science in JC?

Not automatically. Some H2 science subjects assume the pure syllabus and some JC combinations have their own requirements, so the route is narrower rather than closed. Check the specific courses your child is aiming at.

How many papers does a Combined Science student sit?

Four. Paper 1, the multiple-choice paper covering both their sciences; the two structured papers for their particular pairing; and Paper 5, the practical test. Five papers exist across the three pairings, and each candidate sits four of them.

The school is recommending Combined Science and we were hoping for Pure. Should we push back?

Ask what the recommendation is based on. If it is subject level, the answer is about moving to G3 and there is a deadline. If it is timetable, that is a trade-off you can weigh yourself. If it is Sec 2 results in one specific discipline, that is fixable and worth fixing before the form goes in. Push back on a default, not on a reasoned recommendation.

Our child is fine at science but has no idea what they want to do. Which way should we lean?

Keep the option open, which usually means the stronger route your child can carry comfortably rather than the maximum they can survive.
