Primary Science Tuition Singapore

Arche Academy teaches primary science from Primary 3, the year science starts, to Primary 6, in classes of no more than five. In P3 and P4 we build the habit that PSLE Science marks hardest: explaining an answer with the right science words, not just knowing it. From P5, classes turn to the PSLE. We are at Blk 208 Hougang Street 21, three minutes from Kovan MRT.

First year to PSLE

Two stages

Primary science has two jobs

Science starts in P3, and the habits a child forms in the first two years decide how PSLE Science goes. We teach the foundation years and the PSLE years as separate classes.

1

P3 and P4: the foundation years

New vocabulary, first experiments and the first open-ended questions. The work here is learning to explain: why a magnet attracts, why a shadow forms, why a plant needs light, in a full sentence with the right science keyword.

2

P5 and P6: PSLE science

The five themes come together in one paper, and Booklet B rewards precise cause-and-effect answers. That class has its own page: PSLE Science tuition for P5 and P6.

P3 and P4

P3 and P4 science tuition

Primary science looks easy in P3. The topics are friendly, plants, animals, magnets, and most children enjoy them. The trouble shows up in the open-ended questions, where a child who clearly understands the idea still loses marks because the answer is vague or misses the keyword the marker is looking for.

That habit sets early. A child who learns in P3 to write “the magnet attracts the iron nail because iron is a magnetic material” instead of “because it is a magnet” has a two-year head start on PSLE Booklet B.

So our P3 and P4 classes do two things: teach the MOE syllabus for the level, and train the answer. Every topic ends with open-ended questions written, marked and rewritten.

At the end of P4, the school uses the year-end results to recommend Standard or Foundation Science for P5. Here is how P4 subject-based banding works. Our tutors have also set out where primary students lose marks in Science, with before-and-after Booklet B answers.

P3 and P4 children share one class of up to five. The answering skill is the same at both levels, and it is the part of science that improves most with practice.

The syllabus

What P3 and P4 science cover

From the MOE 2023 Primary Science syllabus. Schools choose the order within each year.

Level Theme Topics
P3 Diversity Living and non-living things; classifying living things; diversity of materials
P3 Cycles Life cycles of plants; life cycles of animals
P3 Interactions Properties of magnets; making and using magnets
P4 Systems Plant system; human systems; matter
P4 Energy Light and shadows; heat and its effects

Why P4 matters more than it looks. At many schools the P4 end-of-year paper already has the PSLE shape: a multiple-choice booklet and an open-ended booklet, close to the PSLE split of marks. P4 is where a child either gets used to that format or meets it for the first time in P5.

How we teach

What lessons look like

Five children, not fifteen

Every class is capped at five, so the tutor reads every open-ended answer each child writes, not a sample of them.

Keywords, every topic

Each topic comes with the science words the marker expects. Children learn them as part of the idea, not as a list to memorise in P6.

Write, mark, rewrite

Open-ended answers are written in class, marked on the spot and rewritten until they would score full marks. That loop is the whole skill.

You can see what happened

Every family gets a private parent dashboard with homework tracking and lesson-by-lesson notes.

Results

A primary science result we can name

Jaeden, PSLE Science. In his mother’s words: “From a 55% (AL 6) in his Primary 4 End-of-Year exam to an outstanding 91% (AL 1) in the PSLE Prelim, his improvement has been nothing short of incredible.” He also won an Edusave Good Progress Award for being in the top 10% for improvement. More results, with names, are on our reviews page.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

Do you teach P3 and P4 science?+
Yes. P3 and P4 are taught together in one small class, capped at five students, Tuesday to Friday 3pm to 9pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm. Lessons follow the MOE 2023 Primary Science syllabus for your child’s level and the pace of your child’s school. From P5, students move to our PSLE Science class.
When does science start in primary school?+
Science is taught as a subject from Primary 3. P3 and P4 cover the first set of topics across the five themes, and P5 and P6 build on them for the PSLE.
What does P3 science cover?+
Living and non-living things, classifying living things and materials (Diversity), life cycles of plants and animals (Cycles), and magnets (Interactions).
What does P4 science cover?+
The plant system, human systems and matter (Systems), and light, shadows and heat (Energy).
My child understands science but still loses marks. Why?+
Almost always it is the open-ended answers: correct idea, vague wording, missing keyword. It is a writing skill, and P3 and P4 are the best years to build it, before the PSLE format makes every mark count.
How big are your primary science classes?+
Five students, maximum, at every level.
Do you also teach PSLE science for P5 and P6?+
Yes, as a separate class focused on the five themes, Booklet B answering technique and timed practice. See our PSLE Science tuition page.
Where and when are classes held?+
At Blk 208 Hougang Street 21, #04-215, three minutes from Kovan MRT. Classes run Tuesday to Friday from 3pm to 9pm and on Saturday from 9am to 5pm.
