Additional Mathematics (syllabus 4049) is assessed across two written papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each 2 hours 15 minutes and worth 90 marks. The two papers are equally weighted, every question is compulsory, and any topic can appear in either paper, so there is nowhere to hide a weak area. Marks are awarded for clear, logical working, not just the final answer, and an approved calculator is allowed throughout. At Arche Academy we train students to set out full working, choose the right method under time pressure, and move confidently across the three strands: Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, and Calculus.

Additional Math is cumulative and unforgiving of shaky algebra. Sec 3 lays the groundwork, including quadratic functions, indices and surds, polynomials, the binomial theorem, and the early trigonometry and coordinate geometry that every Sec 4 topic leans on. Starting in Sec 3 means your child locks in these fundamentals as they are taught, instead of scrambling to rebuild them while tackling the hardest material. In Sec 4 the focus shifts to calculus, differentiation and integration and their applications to rates of change and maxima and minima, the single biggest source of marks and the topic students most often find overwhelming. Whichever year your child is in, lessons are aligned to their current academic situation, building and reinforcing the fundamentals before we set a study plan for each student.

Additional Math is taken alongside E-Math, not instead of it. It goes far deeper, introducing calculus, advanced trigonometry, and algebra that E-Math does not cover, and is often required for students aiming at H2 Math, the sciences, or engineering in Junior College and beyond. E-Math builds the essential numeracy every student needs; A-Math is the more demanding subject that stretches stronger mathematicians.

Sec 3 is ideal. The Sec 3 topics, including quadratics, surds, polynomials, and early trigonometry, underpin the Sec 4 calculus and advanced trigonometry, so a firm start stops gaps from compounding. Sec 4 students are just as welcome; we quickly diagnose weak topics and focus on exam technique and timing.

Calculus, differentiation and integration and their applications, together with trigonometric identities and proofs, the R-formula, and the binomial theorem, are the usual pain points, along with presenting full and logical working. Our lessons break these down step by step and drill them with past-year questions until they become second nature.
